Laura Enever HPC SURF Camp.

(18th December, 2011): Christmas came early for young grommet Pacha Light when she shared a few waves with her hero at the Surfing Australia Laura Enever Pro Surfer Camp at Casuarina. Earlier this year 10-year-old Pacha from Woombah in northern NSW was busking at the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros on the Gold Coast to earn enough money to buy a surfboard. Narrabeen’s Laura Enever, who was competing in the Roxy Pro, noticed Pacha dancing away and joined her for a bit of a boogie before vanishing only to return a short time later with a surfboard. “When Laura came back she had a surfboard and I thought she wanted me to sign it because she also had a pen,” Pacha said. “But she gave me the board and we crossed out ‘busking for a board’ on my sign and changed it to ‘busking for a legrope and fins’.” Since their first meeting, the pair has kept in contact via Facebook but the camp was the first time they have seen each other since their dance-off on the Gold Coast. Laura, who finished her debut year on the elite World Tour in 10th, said it was fantastic to see Pacha’s enthusiasm for surfing. “I saw her busking for a board and thought that was the coolest thing I have ever seen,” 20-year-old Laura said. “Pacha has been riding that board all year and she came second in her first contest a few weeks ago. “It’s cool to see a year later she is into contests and she loves surfing and it’s all because I gave her my board, which for me personally is great and now she’s at my camp.” Pacha was one of a bunch of eager young surfers spending time with Laura who was hosting her first Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp. “I just want the girls to come out of the camp with more confidence and awareness of what they have to do to improve and the path they need to go down to achieve that,” Laura said. “From surfing with them they are all on different levels but they are doing so well and it’s great to see how into surfing they are and how much they want improve. We did the video analysis and they are all really excited to get to know what they need to do to get to the next step. “The HPC is doing incredible things and the fact they bring in professional surfers so all the kids get to hang out and surf with them is fantastic.” Laura’s camp was the first of a series of Pro Surfer Camps to be conducted over summer by the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. Camp participants will meet and surf with their surfing hero while receiving coaching from Australia’s finest fully accredited coaches. The camps will also feature video analysis using state of the art computer software to illustrate correct surfing technique.
